Websters 1828 Dictionary:

LEG'ACY, [L. legatum, from lego, to send, to bequeath.]
A bequest; a particular thing, or certain sum of money given by last will or testament.
Good counsel is the best legacy a father can leave to his child.

BEQUE'ATH, v.t. [Eng.quoth.] To give or leave by will; to devise some species of property by testament; as, to bequeath an estate or a legacy.

INHER'ITANCE, n. An estate derived from an ancestor to an heir by succession or in course of law; or an estate which the law casts on a child or other person, as the representative of the deceased ancestor.

4. That which is possessed or enjoyed.

Ask of me, and I will give thee the heathen for thine inheritance. Ps.2.

  HER'ITAGE, n.

1. Inheritance; an estate that passes from an ancestor to an heir by descent or course of law; that which is inherited. In Scot's law, it sometimes signifies immovable estate, in distinction from movable.

2. In Scripture, the saints or people of God are called his heritage, as being claimed by him, and the objects of his special care. 1 Pet.5.

A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children.

We may receive eternal inheritance through Jesus Christ:

Personal Application:

The most important legacy we can leave our children is good counsel. It's something we choose to do... to give; it's not something that will just happen. 

As a Christ follower, I have an eternal inheritance. I hope and pray that my children will choose for themselves to be Christ followers.

My children are a heritage. How I choose to bring them up, talk with them by my side, interact with them, invest my time in them, and educate them... will effect future generations (my children's children).
