Seashells!

The Noah Plan- History
Week 6, Quarter 1

When continuing on with our History studies, we observe God's Principle of Individuality seen in seashells. It's one thing to observe seashells and talk about them...

 ... but it's another thing to observe them closely and have God as the center of the discussion about seashells. 

I love enjoying such natural treasures in my children's little hands. I love how they wonder about them and closely observe the unique traits God has given each one and how no two are exactly alike. Individuality....

Over the years, our family has collected a lot of broken shells on the beach. The only ones we ever seem to find in tact are the muscles. So, I went to Micheal's Craft Store and purchased a variety pack of small shells. I also purchased a few larger ones.

I came across this website for identifying sea shells and I love it! It introduced me to Cloudy Periwinkles and I fell in love with them! The blues and the greens are gorgeous! (In fact, I love everything about this photo! It's gorgeous!!!)

After holding the shells, observing, admiring and talking about how they reflect God's Principle of Individuality, we moved on to our notebooking page. I printed them on card stock paper because she used water color to paint them. The thickness of the card stock helps absorb the water but she still had to be careful to control how wet she got the paper.

What We Did:

The Holy Land- Bible W9, Q1

I am very excited about how the timing has worked out for us to learn about the Holy Land while using two different curricula. This is my first double-purpose post where I am blogging about both The Noah Plan and Creation to the Greeks lessons in our homeschool.

Note: I am still using the Noah Plan because I love it! However, since there aren't any families using the Noah Plan (that I know of) in our area, I wanted to use My Father's World as well so I'd have something in common with other families in our area. That being said, I am still using the Bible Principles to build upon our lessons in the My Father's World curriculum.

So... I covered the Bible Principle and Leading Idea with all of my children (because this is something for all ages to learn). When teaching the Noah Plan lesson (using a simple map of the Holy Land), my older kids reviewed it. Then my younger one colored and listened as I expanded on this lesson with my older kids using the lesson from Creation to the Greeks (which consists of a more detailed map of the Holy Land).

 This works so well as the Creation to the Greeks lesson ends up building upon what my older ones have already learned via The Noah Plan (Isa 2810: (KJV) For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little....) And that right there is part of what the Principle Approach method is about!

I like that my kids are mapping about the Holy Land because it helps to make the history in the Bible a reality (these events actually happened in these places to these people).

Jesus' Resurrection- Noah Plan W8, Q1

I appreciate so much how the Noah Plan helps me to guide my children in learning about Jesus' overcoming death and that He lives. This lesson doesn't stop there. We read from Scripture about this account and discuss from the lesson plan about the significance of the resurrection.

There are many responsibilities which a shepherd has! This Noah Plan lesson beautifully takes us through the Parable of the Lost Sheep and shows us how to reason from Scripture for personal application of this parable.

Holy Innocents

In our study about Christina Rossetti, we learned about her individual contribution to the art of poetry. I appreciate studying the individuality of different poets because I think so much of their uniqueness is seen in their written expression of thought.

We are working on memorizing portions of her poem, Holy Innocents, to be recited at our Principle Approach homeschool co-op (more posts on the co-op as soon as I can find my battery charger for my camera!).

While I have enjoyed reading poetry throughout my life, I do not recall learning many of the different things about poetry. In preparation for this lesson, we are to read pages 108-123 of The Noah Plan's Literature Guide. However, I chose to focus on pages 108-113, and page 123. I decided to pull out this information to teach with this lesson:

The Noah Plan's lesson for this week is about the Good Samaritan. Along with this lesson, I like to encourage our children to keep an eye out for ways they can help someone in need. This means I need to keep my eyes open, too. 

I was recently reading an article titled, The Not-So-Good-Samaritan, which caused me to reflect and ponder. It made me ask myself, "Am I willing to help a complete stranger in person? Or am I more apt to help family and friends because that is comfortable, it's what I know and it feels safe?"

Lord, please help me to be aware.

I think it goes without saying that children need to have their parents with them when dealing with strangers. So, what are some ways we can shepherd our children in this area? Here are a few which come to mind:

For some reason I most often think of history as events that have taken place with people and places. However, nature... creation... is a part of history, too!

Today we are doing leaf rubbings (at least my littler ones are). I'm also working on classification with my kids. I expect my older ones to learn the classifications.; that's not so much a focus for my littler ones at this time. Aside from our notebook page, we'll be adding leaf classifications and plants to our nature journals once a week (as is the goal anyway!).

You'll see in your curriculum in the left hand column that the Leading Idea has to do with the Biblical account of the fishes and loaves. The richness of The Noah Plan takes me (the mom and teacher) and my children (the students) deeper than just reading about it. The lesson takes us through a discussion for personal application.

Stewardship.

My children are learning how Jesus' power is revealed when we are willing to govern ourselves under him (i.e. stewardship modeled after him, sharing, etc.) How amazing that so many people were able to be fed because a small child shared his lunch! What wondrous acts of God will people see when each of us choose to share what we have with them? It really gives us pause to think, doesn't it?

I think this is an example of how God's economy is much different than man's idea of economy.

Did you realize that the science of chemistry was created by God on the first day of Creation? Genesis 1:1 tells us:

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters."

 

I went to look it up in Webster's 1828 Dictionary and learned this. So I looked it up under the spelling from back in the day and this is the definition:

History Week 4 Quarter 1

(This Makes a Great Unit Study!)

This is a fantastic lesson to go over with the kids about history and how they are a part of it, too. We go through two steps for this lesson.

The first one covers, "What Shows That I Am Me?" The Noah Plan Curriculum has examples to help the kids to get ideas and to get the thinking processes started for more. The ones in the photo below are some that our kids came up with on their own during our group discussion.

I love this because it reinforces the truth that each of us are individuals and what it is that makes us so. I think this is such an essential concept for all of us to grasp; it especially matters so that we have the mindset that each of us have been given purposes, gifts and talents by God to use for His Glory!

The second portion of this lesson covers the beautiful poem "Starting With Me" by Rosalie June Slater. Then the kids draw self-portraits.

I love the potential to learn more at a higher level. We parents/teachers are assigned to read pages 8-9, 75-79 in The Noah Plan History and Geography Guide. We also have the opportunity to become more educated by reading pages 155-156, 230-231 in Teaching and Learning America's Providential History.

This is the second week of studying lullabies, their purposes and the importance of them. I do enjoy seeing how the Bible Principle for lullabies applies to literature. Jesus is Our Model- Bible

The Bible Principle in this Noah Plan lesson is about pleasing God. I love the content of this lesson and I really appreciate having all of the content laid out for me.

I chose to use a coloring page about Jesus being baptized for this one. I desire to have my children have early knowledge of baptism and Scripture tells us that God was pleased with Jesus after he was baptized (Matthew 3:16-17). Many other actions are pleasing to our Heavenly Father as well, and perhaps you will want to utilize a coloring page of one of those instead. It's your homeschool so you do as you feel lead.

It can be easy to take what we know about the earth for granted and at a surface level. We all know earth is different from the other planets and that its the only one which is designed to support life.

What about the purposes of different continents? Why are there so many? What is individualized about them? For instance, it's interesting to consider the course of history and how...

"The first glance we cast upon the annals of the nations, enables us to perceive a singular but incontestable fact, that the civilizations representing the highest degree of culture ever attained by man, at the different periods of history, do not succeed each other in the same places, but pass from one country to another, from one continent to another, following a certain order. This order may be called the geographical march of history. What are lullabies for? Did you realize they have literary elements which you can teach to your children? What can they teach us about a nation and a time period? What about the authors?

I love to have my girls get their baby dollies out for these sweet lessons about lullabies. They have all especially loved this. *My boys never have been into baby dolls, so when I've taught them this lesson I've held the baby doll or a real baby sibling of theirs and demonstrate how I sing lullabies to a baby.

For You to Do:

Before the lesson, we parents have the privilege to learn some new things ourselves. In The Noah Plan Literature Curriculum Guide (this covers all grade ranges by the way!), I read some insightful things about lullabies. I'll share one of them with you.

I wonder how many of the aspects covered in this lesson are overlooked when reading these passages about Jesus' early years.

What words are there to express awe at such a Mighty God?

Does worship swell in your heart, too?

Is there any doubt that Scripture is the inspired Word of God? How else would people know such things so far back in time without any fancy equipment that we have today?


This lesson covers the solar system and how the earth is a part of it. We take our kids through Scriptures pertaining to the earth. It's one of my favorite things to share about with our kids.

The Noah Plan Week 2, Quarter 1

When you think of remembering God, and His Ways, and His Word... do you think only of the past events which are specifically recorded in the Bible?

Isn't all of history His Story?

Just think of God's work in your own life. In part, it's something this lesson requires us to share with our children for this week. In fact, this is something we should be sharing with them daily. Don't you think so, too? I mean more than just what has happened throughout your past. I mean today throughout the day. Are we saying, "Do you know what God has done for me today?" or "This is what I have seen God do today!" How are we helping our children develop those eyes to see God's Providential Hand at work in our family's lives?

Mark Hamby with Lamplighter Publishing uses a game with his kids called Sighting! You can read about it at his blog. This just may be a useful and fun way to help our kids keep alert for evidence of God being near. What do you think? Will you try this game on a regular basis with your children, too?

Is your heart yielded to God?

This week's literature lesson from The Noah Plan Kindergarten curriculum teaches on what it means to have a heart yielded to God. We also cover the individuality of King David, the author of  the Psalms. We talk about how King David had a heart yielded to God which gave him the ability to express praise and thanksgiving through his poetry.  It's pretty amazing to think of teaching this to a Kindergartner, huh? I'm so delighted to be giving our children this foundation at such an early age.

What is one way that you express praise and thanksgiving to God? I love to express them in many ways but especially through visual art.

We've used this curriculum with each of our many children and still I ask myself if I help them to consider this important question often enough. How often is often enough? Daily.
